Language
We are going to begin our unit on poetry We will be working on reading and interpreting poetry. As we read, we will be learning to use the reading comprehension strategy called 'inferring' to help us understand the text.

Inferring means figuring out something that the author doesn't actually say. You can use clues that are in the text, and things from your own mind. Sometimes it's called "reading between the lines," and it adds a lot more meaning to the story.

When we infer, we use our background knowledge and clues to help us understand what we are reading. We should do the following:

  • I will look for clues in the text. Are there any words that give me a hint?
  • I will look for clues from the pictures (e.g., facial expressions).
  • I will use my background knowledge. I will think about what I already know. Does this give me any clues?

Some prompts we could use are:

  • “I think...”
  • “Maybe it means....”
  • “I’m guessing that....”
  • “I predict......”

Feel free to use the following website to assist your child with inferring. 'Into the Book' has many good activities that could assist your child with reading comprehension. This is located in the student portal. Or, feel free to use the following link.

The following are a couple of simple ideas of how to use inferring.

In Math

This week we will begin our unit on Probability. Students are predicting  the outcome of various experiments by using some of the following vocabulary. For example, 'I think there is an equal chance of my coin landing on heads or tails because there are two sides of the coin".

We will be using some of the following terms to describe outcomes.

A great visual for Probability

In Religion
