We has a busy week back after March break.
In Math, we completed our unit on Probability. We are going to begin our next unit on fractions this week. We will begin by exploring equal parts of a whole.
In Math, we completed our unit on Probability. We are going to begin our next unit on fractions this week. We will begin by exploring equal parts of a whole.
The students will be comparing fractions using concrete materials (e.g., use fraction pieces to show that three fourths are bigger than one half, but smaller than one whole). We will be looking at the relationship between the number of fractional parts of a whole and the size of the fractional parts (e.g., a paper plate divided into fourths has larger parts than a paper plate divided into eighths).
Please encourage your children to practice these skills at home or with the use of technology such as IXLmath. They could start by practising equal parts. Check out the following link.

In Language, we will continue to read poetry and begin discussing storywriting.
What makes a good story?
- Beginning- characters (main characters should be described), setting (where and when), problem
- Middle- at least four main events
- End- the problem is solved- the solution
- Good details – interesting
- Colourful words
- Interesting opening sentence
- Interesting closing
- COPS- check your rough copy- capitalization, ideas are organized, punctuation, spelling
- Ideas have to be organized
In Science, I have introduced our next unit called Structures and Mechanisms unit. The students will learn about some of the basic types of simple machines (e.g., an inclined plane, lever, screw, wedge). We will disuss examples of ways in which some simple machine are used in daily life to make tasks easier.
In Physical Education, the students will continue to participates in a wide variety of program activities including cooperative games and basketball drills.
In Religion, we will discuss the meaning and rituals of Lent and continue to prepare our hearts for Easter.
